$36M Sewer Project Begins

BVU CLOSES FIRST PHASE OF $36M SEWER REHABILITATION PROJECT FUNDING
Loan Closing

BRISTOL, VA; January 8, 2020 – BVU Authority closes on nearly $8 million of initial funding for sewer infrastructure construction projects January 10. These initial projects will span approximately the next 9 months and will be completed with 0% interest loans through a $36 million funding package from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). An additional $7 million of funding is expected to be utilized later this year for a second phase of improvements.

As part of the ongoing effort to replace aging sewer pipelines to decrease the possibility of sewer overflows and spills, BVU is rehabilitating portions of the Little Creek and Beaver Creek sewer pipelines (see below for additional project details). These pipelines benefit a large portion of BVU’s wastewater system – nearly 6,000 customer locations.

Aging and broken sewer mains and manholes have plagued BVU’s wastewater system operations for decades. Proactive repairs will ensure reliable wastewater for the next several decades. While work on the projects is being done, there may be alternate traffic patterns, parking restrictions and construction noise during normal working hours. The BVU Sewer Rehabilitation Map shows upcoming service line replacement work.

“Through an effective use of DEQ funding and management from our team, we’ve been able to identify infrastructure improvements that provide the greatest value to our customers,” said Manager of Water/Wastewater Operations & GIS, Philip King. “As we move through these projects, we will continue to evaluate our system and remain good environmental partners.”

Work will generally be performed between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The projects will not require access to customer’s homes or commercial buildings. Additional details for affected properties will be given in advance through door-to-door outreach. BVU Authority will also have an engineering representative onsite during most work hours.
