Utility Scams on the Rise

Woman on phone call

Washington County, VA; November 28, 2022 - Customers are receiving phone calls from individuals claiming to be representatives of BVU Authority. The caller states that the utility account is past due, and payment must be made immediately to avoid service interruption. Payment is usually requested through a prepaid debit card such as Green Dot.

Helpful Tips to Avoid Being Scammed:

  • BVU Authority does NOT make calls after hours to request payment for delinquent accounts, nor do our crews disconnect delinquent accounts after working hours.
  • If you receive a call from anyone requesting immediate payment or personal information, please hang up and call BVU Authority to verify the requested information.
  • Do NOT call the phone number that the caller provides you. The BVU Authority phone number is 276-669-4112. Do NOT give information or payment over the phone to anyone threatening immediate disconnection of service.
  • BVU Authority working hours are weekdays, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Do NOT meet anyone after business hours or on weekends to make a payment.
  • Call the Police and report any suspicious behavior.
