Outage Restoration Process

BVU Authority's Approach to Power Restoration

BVU Authority is dedicated to restoring power in a manner that prioritizes public health and safety while ensuring the swift and safe return of service to the maximum number of customers. Our restoration process follows a method that emphasizes efficiency, speed, and the community's well-being.

Understanding How We Respond to Outages

At BVU Authority, we strongly emphasize returning power to critical public health and safety facilities, such as medical centers, law enforcement agencies, fire departments, and pumping stations. We recognize that restoring power to these vital facilities is essential to safeguard the health and well-being of the public. Additionally, we focus on restoring power to major employment centers to support the local economy and ensure its vitality.

Preparedness for Severe Weather

When severe weather threatens our service area, BVU Authority takes proactive measures to prepare in advance. Our dedicated team closely monitors storm paths to identify potentially affected areas. This allows us to coordinate and dispatch our crews promptly to assist with restoration efforts in the affected locations. We also assess the need for additional assistance from contractors or other utility crews, ensuring a comprehensive response.

Safety as Our Top Priority

The safety of the public and our personnel is our utmost priority. Our first step in achieving this goal is promptly identifying downed power lines and ensuring that electricity is no longer flowing through them. We urge everyone to assume that downed power lines are energized and dangerous. It is crucial to consider any object touching these lines as energized. In case of any downed power lines, please report them immediately to BVU Authority or local emergency authorities.

Our Restoration Process: A Sequential Approach

  1. Transmission Lines: These lines deliver electricity from power plants to substations, supplying power to large numbers of customers and covering expansive geographic areas.

  2. Substation Equipment: Within substations, specialized equipment adjusts the transmission line voltage to levels suitable for our main distribution lines.

  3. Main Distribution Lines: Also referred to as primary lines, these carry electricity to large subdivisions and commercial areas, ensuring power supply to a significant number of customers.

  4. Local Distribution Lines: Installed overhead or underground, these secondary lines deliver electricity to smaller neighborhoods and businesses. They are often known as "tap" lines.

  5. Distribution Transformers and Service Lines: These final components of our restoration process deliver overhead or underground electricity directly to individual homes and businesses, ensuring power is restored at the customer level.

By adhering to this restoration sequence and integrating safety measures at every step, BVU Authority ensures an efficient and secure restoration process that prioritizes the well-being of our customers and the community.

If your neighbor's power is on but yours is not

Sometimes, you may see a neighbor's lights come back on while you are still without power. There can be several explanations. Perhaps not all circuits are restored at the same time – different parts of your neighborhood may be served by different circuits. Or a restored customer’s service comes directly from a primary line, which is restored first, while your service may be served off a secondary line. There may also be a problem with your individual service line or your meter.
