How BVU Authority Prepares for Storms
Trees are the leading cause of power outages, particularly when storms cause them to fall onto electric lines. BVU Authority prepares for these events year-round by pruning trees to reduce outages while providing safe, reliable services. We also monitor weather conditions closely and, when there is a threat of severe weather, take extra precautions to ensure sufficient staffing levels are maintained to respond quickly to any outages that may occur.
How You Can Prepare for Storms
Our employees are always prepared, and we want our customers to be prepared, too. Here are some steps you can take to ensure you're ready for storms:
- Keep emergency supplies on hand, such as batteries, flashlights, a battery-operated radio, nonperishable food items, bottled water, and a charged cell phone. The Red Cross also recommends including a supply of your necessary medications.
- Keep your BVU Authority account information up-to-date, including your phone number and email address. A correct phone number ensures that you can use our automated system to report outages and check their status. You can easily update your contact information by logging into your account and selecting Manage Account. For more tips, refer to our Power Outage Reference Guide.
- Have a plan in place for what to do in the event of a multi-day power outage. This may include arranging accommodations like a hotel room or staying with family or friends.
- Learn how to operate a portable generator and follow these important tips safely:
- Generators should always be installed and inspected by licensed electricians. Improper installation can create hazards for utility workers and homeowners.
- Never connect a generator directly to your home's primary wiring circuit. Be sure to disconnect your home from the power system before using a generator. If not properly isolated, electricity could flow back into the grid, endangering others, including the linemen working to restore power.
- Always place the generator outside your home to prevent carbon monoxide buildup, especially with gasoline-powered generators.
- Plug appliances directly into the generator. If using extension cords, do not exceed the recommended wattage listed on the generator.
